Misophonia is a sensitivity to sounds like chewing, talking and even breathing. For some sufferers it can seem unbearable. So much so that it can cause distress and even panic. Consequently the person may start to avoid situations and even withdraw completely from society or even their own family. Another common way of coping is wearing noise cancelling headphones. This can work well, but unfortunately still leads to isolation and lack of socialisation. Obviously wearing headphones is not allowed in school, so children with Misophonia can suffer from anxiety around school.
EMDR can train the brain to be less sensitive to certain sounds. It can also help to return the body back to calm. Hypnotherapy works by using visualisation techniques while imagining coping mechanisms. Research suggests that imagining dealing with things in a calm way is more effective then exposure therapy. This can be done with children as young as 5 and adults up to any age.
The average amount of sessions for this is 5. Each session there will be both hypnotherapy and EMDR. Following every session a recording will be given to the client to listen to at home. There is usually a gap of around 2 to 3 weeks between sessions.
