School Refusal

Treatment for School Refusal
Calm vs Panic

School anxiety and school refusal is becoming increasingly common. It is an overwhelming feeling of anxiety connected to being in school. It is rarely a form of defiance. Causes can vary from separation anxiety, GAD disorder, autism, bullying, OCD, fear of being sick etc. Transitioning to high school can exacerbate this problem. As can puberty.

Parents often feel helpless. There may be limited support from CAMHS and Social Services. It is common for parents to feel shame for this problem.

Treatment for School Refusal

Children may be unable to verbalise why they are finding school too much. Therefore, hypnotherapy and EMDR can help. As they are not talking therapies, there is no pressure for your child to talk to the therapist. Making it a treatment of choice for autistic children and selective mutism. Parents are given constructive advice. EMDR and hypnotherapy will be carried out in the same session. The average number of sessions is 4. All children are different and your child may require more or less.

There is a free 15 minute chat available on Tuesdays to discuss your child’s situation. Alternatively, use my booking page to book a full session.
